The interviews also gave a much clearer understanding of the unavoidable fact that young people involved in gun crime have an entirely different view of firearm possession than the law enforcement authorities would wish. Around half of the interviewed young people indicated that they felt firearms possession was acceptable under some circumstances, with a distinction drawn between acceptability and need:

I wouldn’t say there is ever going to be a time when it’s acceptable but there’s always a need … The need is when you’re under pressure and you’re threatened.
